McCain Can’t Strip Spending

Despite his best efforts, the majority of the United States Senate is rejecting Senator John McCain’s attempts to strip certain projects and program funding the from the agriculture appropriations bill that is moving towards Senate passage this week.

According to Marc Heller’s reporting in the Watertown Daily Times.com, one of the projects McCain focused on was a $372,000 study of dairy profitability in Pennsylvania. Heller reports that Senator McCain was of the opinion that, after years of governmental help, if dairy farmers still can’t make a profit then it might be time to consider another line of work. McCain’s attempts to strike millions from the bill all failed, even when the Senator had the backing of the Obama administration.

Passage of the agriculture appropriations bill is expected this week. Following the August recess lawmakers from the House and the Senate will conference over the bill to determine what funding levels in the final version will look like. To read Heller’s story click here.
