According to the White House press release, the President will announce 66 "new Recovery Act broadband projects nationwide that, according to the grantees, will not only directly create approximately 5,000 jobs up front, but will also help spur economic development in some of the nation's hardest-hit communities, helping create jobs for years to come."
This announcement "comes amid news that U.S. employment fell for the first time this year in June as thousands of temporary census jobs ended and private hiring grew less than expected" as reported by Reuters.
According to Cecilia Kang of the Washington Post, the broadband grants focus on "middle-mile awards, to support the fiber networks that lead into schools, hospitals and homes. Analysts say middle-mile investments are a wiser allocation of funds than end-mile grants straight to people's doorsteps, which would be more costly."
