USDA Announces Emergency Assistance

USDA announced on June 30, 2010 that disaster assistance will be issued to "livestock, honeybee and farm-raised fish producers that suffered losses in 2008 due to disease, adverse weather or other conditions."

This aid comes from the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP).  The ELAP program compensates producers for losses "that are not covered under other Supplemental Agricultural Disaster Assistance Payment programs established by the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008."

ELAP will issue more than "$10 million in disaster assistance, including more than $6 million to compensate beekeepers for 2008 losses" of which many suffered from Colony Collapse Disorder.  ELAP eligibility has been amended for honeybee and farm-raised fish producers.
