UA Field Day Features Research on Biofuel Crops

The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture recently held a field day featuring research by scientists on the potential of "biofuel crops as alternatives for diversifying Arkansas agriculture" according to 40/29 TV.

The research focused on the production needs and yield potential for sweet sorghum, switchgrass and cottonwood trees.  "Chuck West, professor of crop, soil and environmental sciences, and Hal Liechty, associate professor of hydrology and ecology at the division's Arkansas Forest Resources Center, are conducting a joint study on the use of cottonwood trees and switchgrass as cellulosic biofuel crops in marginal soils."

Other topics in the field day included a new variety of cotton developed by the Division of Agriculture, the value of seed treatments, weed control and variety selection for rice, and questions relating to soybeans and corn.
