Food safety issues are being hotly debated in Congress this summer as legislators look for ways to prevent pathogen outbreaks like the country has experienced in the past with salmonella and E.coli, and like the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states are currently experiencing with the tomato blight.
It is amidst this political backdrop that on July 21, 2009 the Salinas, California company Tanimura & Antle, Inc. ordered a recall of romaine lettuce according to the Los Angeles Times. To read the LA Times blog on the recall click here.
The recall has been issued after a random test conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture came back positive for salmonella. In response to the test results Tanimura & Antle, Inc. has instructed stores in 29 states to destroy the lettuce. The destruction is being requested even though the expiration date for the lettuce has passed in order to ensure any potentially tainted product does not reach consumers. The lettuce was originally sold to wholesalers and food-service providers. So far no illnesses have been reported.
