Last week, the Institute of Medicine issued a report urging the FDA to adopt a labeling system similar to the "Energy Star" system that helps consumers choose washing machines and other appliances.Ellen Wartella, a Northwestern University psychology professor who chaired the Institute committee that studied food labels at the government's request, stated that, "American shoppers are busy shoppers. We want a really simple system that says if you have three marks, that product is healthier than one with two marks."
FDA spokeswoman Siobhan DeLancey stated that, "FDA agrees consumers can benefit from a front-of-pack labeling system that conveys nutrition information in a manner that is simple and consistent with the Nutrition Facts panel."
