A
sweet deal may be in store for New York maple farmers. Sen. Charles Schumer’s
proposal to promote New York’s maple syrup industry has made its way to the
U.S. House of Representatives.
According to Channel 13 WHAM, “The Senate this past week as part of the 2012 Farm Bill approved Schumer's legislation to create grants to encourage private property owners to expand their tapping operations or to make their land available for tapping.”

The key goal of Schumer’s bill is to increase the percentage of maple trees producers tap in New York. Channel 13 reports, “Cornell University researchers have said producers tap less than 1 percent of available maple trees in New York.”
