Jerry Hagstrom reported that Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid (D-NV) recently proposed that the farm bill could be part of a
larger package, according to a National Journal article, available here.
In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Reid “suggested
that if the House passed the Senate resolution to reopen the government, it could
be followed by large-scale negotiations on budget policies.” Reid wrote, “This conference would be an
appropriate place to have these discussions, where participants could raise whatever
proposals – such as tax reform, health care, agriculture, and certainly
discretionary spending like veterans, national parks, and NIH – they feel
appropriate.”
Boehner rejected Reid’s proposal, but Reid followed up
at a news conference saying, “The farm bill’s hung up. We’ll talk about that.”
The House appointed its farm bill conferees over the
weekend, moving the farm bill process forward.
A recent post from this blog on the House farm bill conferees is
