While Congress has been on break for the holidays, key
members of the farm bill conference have been working on a compromise farm bill
proposal, according to an Agri-Pulse article available here.
While a conference meeting has not been scheduled,
sources and reports indicate that conferees are likely to meet this week. Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said
“he expects the farm bill to be completed by the end of the month.”
Senate Agricultural Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) said
that the negotiators are “just tying up loose ends” and “feeling very good
about things” going into a full meeting of the House-Senate conference later
this week, according to a Politico article available here.
Stabenow said she “fully” expects a formal session to
be scheduled in the next few days and hoped that a conference report could be
signed, “clearing the way for floor consideration as early as next week.”
Stabenow said, “We just have to get through that
conference committee, get the report signed…There’s a desire to get this done
by everybody.”
