Canada will be implementing a new national organic standard on June 30, 2009 for both domestically grown products as well as trade goods. Canada imported more than a billion dollars worth of organic food last year and the agreement to recognize the organic standards of each other will prevent the costly step of having to certify as organic in both countries in order to sell food products across the border. According to Reuters:
"Today's agreement between the world's two largest organic trading partners is an important first step toward global harmonization of organic standards," Deputy Agriculture Secretary Kathleen Merrigan said in a statement.Posted: 06/19/2009
