Today, the New York Times features a story by John M. Broder highlighting the deals made by Democratic House leaders to pass Waxman-Markey last Friday. For story, click here. Although many of the deals are not directed agriculture or rural areas, these are some highlights of the deals cut that benefited agriculture and rural America.
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association after being cut out in early negotiations by the major utilities for trade emission permits was able to secure $400 million annually in emissions permits to help its member small electric cooperatives.
Finally, the biggest deal was the one cut by Chairman of the House Agriculture committee Collin Peterson with Congressman Waxman. The deal as was highlighted in this blog post from June 6, 2009 and this from June 7, 2009, moved oversight of the carbon offsets from the Environmental Protection Agency to the USDA.
