APHIS Developing H1N1 Outbreak Plan

Ken Anderson is reporting for Brownfield’s Ag News that the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has developed a plan of action should there be a positive diagnosis of H1N1 (commonly called swine flu) in a U.S. swine herd.

APHIS is currently in the process of sharing the plan with various stakeholders. The groups APHIS is meeting with include the Centers for Disease Control, the Food Safety Inspection Service, and the pork industry. In the meantime, the pork industry is still busy in a public relations campaign aimed at informing the general populous about the misconceptions of the relationship of H1N1 with pork production and pork products. H1N1 is not transmitted by eating pork or by handling pork products. Additionally, the industry is making sure its stakeholders are comfortable with APHIS’s plan.
