India Against Trade Barriers in U.S.’s Climate Policy

The Associated Press is reporting today that India wants the global climate change agreement to ban trade barriers for countries that penalize countries with lower standards than their own. India made the demand as 180 countries are meeting in Bonn, Germany in order to work out an agreement for the conference in December in Copenhagen.

According to India's chief delegate Shyam Saran "such measures looked like "protectionism under a green label," and were complicating the latest round of climate negotiations in Bonn."

According to the article, the demand is largely aimed at the United States and efforts by some in Congress to include “trade penalties on countries that do not commit to specific action against greenhouse gases.” For previous posts, click here for one on August 13th, and click here, for one on August 7th.
