Joint USDA-DOJ Workshop Focuses on Ag Competition

On August 5, 2009, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack and Department of Justice (DOJ) Attorney General Eric Holder announced the two departments would be co-hosting public workshops to discuss issues related to competition and the future of the agriculture industry in America.

The point of the workshops is to allow all the agriculture industry stakeholders to come to the table and discuss their concerns and questions as they relate to competition within the industry in the 21st century. In addition to competition, discussion will also focus on anti-trust actions and regulatory enforcement within the industry.

According to the statement of Attorney General Holder in the Department of Justice’s news release:

Maintaining a robust agricultural sector is crucial to the strength of the
American economy and to who we are as a nation . . . . Through the dialogue
established in these workshops and, ultimately through our actions, we are
committed to ensuring that competition and regulatory actions benefit all
American consumers and businesses.
Agriculture Secretary Vilsack stated:

It is important to have a fair and competitive marketplace that benefits
agriculture, rural economies and American consumers . . . The joint workshops
between the Department of Justice and USDA will allow a dialogue on very
important issues facing agriculture today.
The first workshop is scheduled for early 2010 in Washington, DC. Similar workshops will be held regionally. To read the DOJ news release click here. To read the USDA news release click here. To read a story on the Farm Futures website click here.
