Twenty animal agriculture organizations have sent a letter to the White House asking the Obama Administration conduct an expert risk assessment over the dangers of “curbing” the use of certain antibiotics used in livestock production. The organizations warn that eliminating the use of sub-theraputic antibiotics in livestock could endanger food safety and animal welfare in the United States. The organizations also claim the move to curb the antibiotic use is politically motivated and not based on sound science.
Previously this year Joshua Sharfstein, Deputy Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration testified that antibiotics should only be given to sick animals and only under the supervision of a veterinarian.
