Minnesota Creates Farmer Assistance Network

Early this month the Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty announced at Farmfest, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is establishing a new Minnesota Farmers Assistance Network (MFAN).

According to the news release issued by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the MFAN will “provide mentoring, technical assistance and financial guidance to farm families facing economic hardship.” This has been a difficult year for those involved in the Minnesota livestock industry. Pork producers have seen a decline in consumer demand for their products while also facing increased feed prices, as well as difficulty in obtaining credit. Additionally, dairy producers have seen the price of milk fall by 50% over the last 12 months.

Agriculture Commissioner Gene Hudson made the following statement in the news release, ‘“We know there are good farmers who are in some very tough situations . . . The goal of MFAN is to provide a streamlined network of services to get them on the road to recovery.”’ The MFAN will be funded through a reallocation of existing funds and will be administered by the Minnesota Rural Finance Authority. Certified volunteers will provide the services offered by the MFAN.
