
Today, Egypt’s agriculture minister issued a statement that no decision has been reached on whether the country would ban the importation of GMO crops. This was a denial of earlier reports that “a certificate accompany all imports to show they were free of genetically modified materials” would be required by Egypt. The earlier reports of the ban surprised many traders because the country is a large importer of GMO soy oil and corn. The debate over GMO crops and food quality issues is growing in Egypt “after some Russian wheat was rejected over quality concerns. Members of parliament have been calling for stricter rules and greater agricultural self-sufficiency.”
