Senators See Tariff Provisions As Critical to Climate Change BIll’s Passage


According to CQ Politics getting 60 votes on climate change legislation in the Senate may hinge on tariffs. To view the CQ Politics article, click here. In a letter sent to President Obama last week, ten Democratic Senators said that tariffs, or in technical language “border adjustments,” are critical to the passage of climate change legislation. According to the letter,
“We believe that a border adjustment mechanism is critical to ensuring that climate change legislation will be trade neutral and environmentally effective[.]”
With few Republicans likely to support the legislation, the demands of these ten Senators maybe important to the bill’s passage, according to CQ Politics.

The ten Senator’s include: Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Carl Levin of Michigan, Evan Bayh of Indiana, Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia, Robert P. Casey of Pennsylvania, Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and Al Franken of Minnesota.
