USDA: $1 Billion in Electric Loans for Rural Infrastructure

Yesterday, August 19, 2009, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that 109, 250 rural electric customers are set to benefit from the distribution of $1.16 billion in loans to “build and repair 11,249 miles of distribution and transmission lines.”

The USDA news release states that 46 rural cooperatives and utilities in 30 states will be the recipients. Vilsack is quoted in the release as saying, "These loans will spur growth in rural America by helping cooperatives and rural utilities deliver improved service to more customers." The loan money can be used to develop alternative energy sources, such as wind power, and to repair infrastructure damages rural communities may have suffered over the years and been unable to fix.
