Dallas Tonsager, Under Secretary for Rural Development announced today, August 10, 2009, on behalf on United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack, that 365 recipients have been chose to receive over $15 million in loans and grants aimed to develop more renewable energy "systems" and increase energy efficiency.The USDA news release quotes Secretary Vilsack as stating:
It is imperative that we secure more self-sufficient energy resources for
our country, and these grants will help enable the long-term sustainability that
the Obama Administration is committed to developing . . . This funding will also
help farmers and rural businesses become more efficient and competitive.
The loans and grants are authorized under the Rural Energy for America Program and administered by USDA Rural Development. This program was established in the 2008 Farm Bill. The money is not a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
