Beef and Bean Burrito Recall Issued

The summer of food recalls continues. Los Angeles Times is reporting today, September 14, 2009, that Windsor Foods of Riverside, California “is recalling 2,268 pounds of beef-and-bean burrito products that may be contaminated with [] bacteria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said . . .”

The products come frozen and individually wrapped inside 18 pound bulk cases under the name Butcher Boy Red Chile Beef & Bean Burritos, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). “Each of the 131 cases contains 72 burritos and features the establishment number ‘EST. 1905’ inside the USDA mark of inspection, along with the package code ‘1219215’ and the case code ‘208001.’ The products were produced Aug. 3 and distributed to a Minnesota storage center. From there, they were made available for sale, though the retail distribution lists are not yet available.”

So far there have been no reports of illnesses due to consumption of the products. “The bacteria can cause listeriosis, which is potentially fatal but rarely contracted by healthy people. However, it can cause high fevers, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea, as well as miscarriages and stillbirths.”
