Food Stamp Usage on the Rise

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is reporting that, for the eighth straight month, the number of food stamp recipients increased. Currently, 35 million Americans receive food stamps, and according to an Associated Press story published on the New York Times’ website, this represents an increase of 700,000 people since May.

Since June 2008, the total number of recipients has increased by 22 percent. The average food stamp user received over $133 in assistance to purchase groceries in June. The average household received over $293 in assistance for June. Clearly the food safety net has been expanded during this recession so that more people can stay food secure.
