UPDATE: USDA: “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food”

Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Kathleen Merrigan announced that $4.8 million will be used to build community food systems and fight hunger and food insecurity in fourteen states. The announcement is part of USDA's new initiative "Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food" that aims to connect people more closely with the farmers who supply their food and increase the production, marketing and consumption of fresh, nutritious food that is grown locally in a sustainable manner. The announcement of $4.8 million though the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service is part of $65 million expected to be awarded for the initiative.
