UPDATED:Chairman Lincoln To Tackle Hunger First

Hunger issues have always been on Senator Blanche Lincoln’s mind. That’s why she helped create the Hunger Caucus. Now, as she takes the gavel for the Senate Agriculture Committee, Chairman Lincoln is not going to forget an issue near and dear to her.

Chairman Lincoln’s Office has issued a press release stating “the pending Agriculture Appropriations final bill includes her package of child nutrition initiatives aimed at fighting hunger and promoting health among children in Arkansas and the country.

The package of child nutrition investments was a joint Lincoln and Rep. George Miller venture. The Fiscal Year 2010 Agriculture Appropriations Conference Report: includes temporary extensions of expiring provisions of the Child Nutrition Act, resulting in a cost savings of $150 million. These savings would be reinvested to meet critical nutrition needs across the country to ensure more children have year-round access to healthy and nutritious meals at school, in child care, and during the summer. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the final Agriculture Appropriations bill Wednesday by a bipartisan vote of 263-162, and the Senate has passed the measure as well, sending it to President Obama's desk for signature.

Chairman Lincoln has also mentioned more than once that she would like to see her committee continue with hunger issues by reauthorizing the Child Nutrition Act.
