Lincoln Takes Gavel in Historic Day For Senate Agriculture Committee

Senator Blanche Lincoln (AR) was recently made the new Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. The Senator's ascension was historic in two ways. First, she is the first Arkansan to chair the committee, and second, she is the first female to chair the committee in its 184-year history.

Given the history of the moment, here is Senator Lincoln's first opening statement as Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. The statement focuses on the bipartisan nature of the committee, and gives an indicator of what issues the new Chairman might like the committee to pursue: the economy in rural America, jobs in the farm commuity, alternative energy, and resource conservation.
