E.coli Lawsuit Filed

Christine McConville is reporting for the Boston Herald that the families of two children who fell ill from eating ground beef tainted with E.coli are suing two suppliers of the beef.

In Plymouth District Court yesterday lawsuits were filed against both the Brockton-based South Shore Meats and Fairbank Farms Inc., which is located in Ashville, New York. One family claims their 12-year-old daughter fell ill after consuming beef produced by Fairbank Farms, and so the family is suing that company.

In the other case, the mother of a boy who attended a school outing at Camp Bournedale in Plymouth in which several students got sick is bringing the suit. While at the camp the children ate hamburgers that allegedly passed the strain of E.coli onto the young man. The boy’s hamburger “was reportedly made with meat from South Shore Meats, which is a subsidiary of Crocetti’s Oakdale Packing Co.

Both companies have recalled various beef products. Crocetti’s has recalled 1,039 pounds of ground beef, while Fairbank Farms has recalled over half a million pounds of fresh ground beef products.

One plaintiff is being represented by the Seattle law firm Marler Clark. The other is represented by Somerset, Massachusetts attorney Steven Sabra. Both suits seek unspecified damages.

According to federal health officials, 28 sicknesses and two deaths in the Northeast are attributed to the beef products being recalled by Fairbank Farms.
