On November 27, 2009, European Commission President Manuel Barroso announced that former Romanian Agriculture Minister Dacian Ciolos will become the new European Union Agriculture Commissioner, subject to approval by the European Parliament. As Alistair Driver reports for Farmers Guardian online, Ciolos will take his post in February, replacing Marianne Fischer Boel, “who is standing down after completing one five-year term.” Currently, Ciolos “holds a senior position within the Commission’s Agriculture and Rural Development department.”
Mr. Ciolos will have a lot on his agenda with the Doha Development round of the World Trade Organization still ongoing. Further there are current debates on the role of agriculture in combating world hunger as well as a global pact to deal with global warming that will likely impact agriculture in some manner.
As NFU acting director general Martin Haworth states in the Farmers Guardian, ‘“Mr Cioloş will pick up the five-year mandate at a crucial time for our farming and growing members, with major decisions soon to be made on the future structure of the Common Agriculture Policy and the EU budget [.]”’
