Another Recall of Beef

This has not been a great year for American beef processors if one judged solely by the amount of recalls that have been issued this year for ground beef and other beef products. Currently, two beef producers are being sued in the Northeast following the death of two consumers from eating allegedly contaminated ground beef.

Now, as a result of E.coli fears, Matt Barnard is reporting for the Tulsa World online that the National Steak and Poultry company, based out of Owasso, Oklahoma has recalled 248,000 pounds of beef shipped to restaurants after people have gotten sick in six different states. This is according to a bulleting sent out by the US Department of Agriculture on Thursday.

Several products are part of the recall, including boneless steaks, bacon-wrapped filets, steak tips and skirt steaks are all being pulled from shelves. The company issued the recall voluntarily, as is the standard under current US law.

The company offers this statement on its website, ‘“Some of our products could potentially be implicated in an outbreak. . . As a precautionary measure, on December 24, 2009 National Steak and Poultry has initiated a voluntary recall.”’‘"This is the first recall in our company's nearly 30-year history. Given our long history of focusing on product safety and our standards of excellence, we will error on the side of being cautious with this recall [.]”’

The USDA issued the recall as Class 1, indicating a serious risk to health. The packages being recalled have packaging dates of October 12-14, or 21, and have the establishment number ‘“EST. 6010T.”’
