APHIS Releases EIS for Roundup Ready Alfalfa

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that evaluates the potential environmental effects of deregulating two lines of genetically engineered alfalfa.

The EIS was prepared after a 2007 by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California that AHPIS had violated NEPA by deregulating the genetically engineered alfalfa without performing an environmental assessment. The court also issued a preliminary injunction by making Roundup Ready alfalfa a regulated article. The court concluded that APHIS had not adequately documented the potential environmental impacts of the crop. To read a summary of the decision, click here.
