US-Russia Agreement Ends Poultry Ban

The United States and Russia have reached an agreement to resume exports of U.S. poultry to Russia.

Russia "banned the import of chicken from countries that use chlorine in poultry processing" in January, according to Arkansas News.  "Bathing chicken in chlorine has been a common practice in U.S. poultry processing plants for more than 25 years."

The USDA press release states that "[u]nder the agreement, the United States will publish information on USDA's website about which disinfectants/pathogen reductions treatments are known to be approved by Russia for use on poultry and on food generally.  The United States will provide information to Russia on the solutions that companies use on poultry shipped to Russia.  In addition, the United States will give Russia an updated list of poultry processing facilities authorized to ship poultry to Russia."

The estimated value of poultry exports to Russia in 2009 was $767 million.
