FAO Suggests Better Regulation of Food Markets

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) suggested that the "volatile food commodities markets need better regulation" according to the Associated Press.

Amid the wheat shortages in Russia, prices have risen to their highest level in two years and this rise in prices has "raised concerns about a return to the political instability of 2008, when Haiti, Kenya and Somalia were among impoverished countries that saw rioting over the cost of living."  Mozambique has already seen deadly riots over the recent rise in food prices.

FAO, however, said that there will not be a new food crisis because worldwide harvest of cereals this year "was the third highest on record and food stocks are high."  FAO also said that the food commodities markets are volatile and suggested that improved regulation and establishing an "appropriate level" of emergency supplies was needed.
