Johnson was hired by Downtown Roanoke Inc., which manages the market for the city. She discusses her first months on the job and what she envisions for the future of the Roanoke Farmers Market in an interview with Lindsey Nair.
The market rules ensure that all products come within a 100-mile radius of Roanoke. They also inspect the farms at the time when a contract is set.
Johnson says that the first couple of months involved a lot of management of people, "setting the market and getting everybody situated in their places on Saturdays." Now, she is envisioning long-term goals for the market. She wants bring more events to the market area and expand market selection with cheese and fish vendors. Johnson would also like to see more small businesses in the downtown area.
