UN Food and Agriculture Organization Meets to Discuss Food Prices

A special meeting "prompted by worries over high food prices" was held by the United Nations to discuss the impact of Russia's grain export ban on cereal markets, according to the Associated Press.

In early August, Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced a ban on all exports of grain to curb rising food prices in the country.  Russia has experienced widespread drought and fires which have destroyed much of its wheat crop this year.  The rising grain prices have recently prompted worry and riots.  To read past Ag&Food Law and Policy Blog posts on this subject, click here and here.

"Russian grain company executives and government officials were among those attending the one-day meeting at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization to examine the role of market information and transparency for crops such as grains and rice."

Sergei Sukhov, a member of Russia's agriculture ministry, said that the market for grains "should be stable and predictable for all participants."
