APHIS Offers Information on Biosecurity for Birds

USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is providing information on bird biosecurity through its website, available here.

APHIS launched its "Biosecurity for Birds" outreach initiative in response to an outbreak of exotic Newcastle disease (END) in Western states.  This was the largest animal disease outbreak in the US in 30 years.  It "took 10 months to eradicate and when it was over, the State and Federal governments had spent more than $160 million, and four million birds were depopulated."

The campaign and information on the website aim to assist backyard poultry and bird owners and also pet bird owners.  APHIS also provides educational information to FFA and 4-H groups on Avian Influenza and END.

The website also provides other educational materials, hygiene information, how to determine signs of disease, report sick birds, and protect birds from disease.
