Consumer Right to Know Food Labeling Act Introduced

Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) recently introduced a bill which would require labeling for genetically modified fish and cloned animals.

The Consumer Right to Know Food Labeling Act, available here, would require the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to mandate labeling of genetically modified fish and would also require USDA to mandate labeling of products of cloned animals if intended for human consumption, according to the news release.

Rep. DeLauro stated, "A recent Food & Water Watch survey revealed that 78 percent of Americans do not want genetically-engineered salmon to be approved and made available in stores and restaurants...Because FDA is treating these genetically modified salmon not as a food issue, but as an animal drug issue, current regulations would leave the consumers unable to discern between these new modified salmon and traditional salmon."

The FDA recently held a hearing on whether to approve genetically modified (GM) salmon for human consumption and whether to label the fish.  For more information on the FDA hearing, click here to read a previous Ag&Food Law and Policy Blog post.
