Report Indicates Food Safety is a Priority for Countries Exporting to US

The Packer reports that according to a report published by The Produce Safety Project at Georgetown University, countries "that supply big volumes of fresh produce to the U.S. are sharpening their focus on prevention of foodborne illness outbreaks."

Jim O'Hara, Director of the Produce Safety Project said that the countries studied in the report "all have various elements in place and the report indicates the coverage of the elements varies...The real message is produce safety standards are already happening and are going to happen even more."

Canada, Chile, China, Mexico, and Peru were included in the study.  "Except for Peru, all countries evaluated in the report are actively involved in helping develop either public or private food safety certification plans for fresh produce farms, packinghouses, storage facilities, wholesalers and exporters."

O'Hara also speculated that the "Food and Drug Administration's proposed rule on fresh produce safety may be published in early 2011."
