Food Safety Bill Avoids Filibuster

The Senate approved a cloture motion today that will remove the possibility of filibuster for the Food Safety Modernization Act with a vote of 74-25. Cloture is a motion to bring debate to a quick end, and this vote will prevent a filibuster from ending the Food Safety Bill.

Although the bill is a bipartisan effort, it has faced many hurdles as a result of two controversial amendments. The Tester Amendment, named for Senator John Tester (D-MT), would exempt small farmers from federal regulation and instead allow them to follow state and local regulations. The Bisphenol A Amendment, sponsored by Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) would limit the use of that chemical in the manufacture of food containers.
