The Louisiana State University AgCenter and the Mississippi State University Cooperative Extension are working together to put on a conference to address ways in which current tourism resources can be enhanced and new resource can be created in rural areas along a region of the country their respective states share. The focus area is a rural stretch of 17 Mississippi counties and 16 Louisiana parishes along the states’ border and the Mississippi River.The 2009 Miss-Lou Regional Tourism Summit to be held August 11-13 at the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, LA. The Delta Farm Press reports that Cynthia Pitcher, and LSU AgCenter community economic development agent believes the event will aid local tourism leaders in rural areas to identify existing opportunities, as well as give them the skills to develop new opportunities, for their communities to market tourism to the area. The theme of the conference is “Gateways to Get-A-Ways: Preserving the Past, Preparing for the Future.”
There will be program sessions on trail development and maintenance, grant development, e-commerce, risk management, festival development, and social marketing. Among those scheduled to speak at the conference include National Agricultural Law Center Staff Attorney Shannon Mirus.
