California Company Expands Ground Beef Recall

Huntington Meat Packing, Inc., based in southern California, is expanding a recall of ground beef and veal that may be contaminated with E. coli. The products being recalled include approximately 4.9 million pounds of products under the Huntington, Imperial Meat Co. and El Ranchero brands.

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said there have been no reports of illness associated with the products, however an agency investigation did find that the company's food safety records were unreliable.

According to the Associated Press, the original recall was announced January 18, 2010 and included only 864,000 pounds of meat. The affected products were sold in 10, 20 and 50-pound boxes to distribution centers, hotels and restaurants in California during January. East box contains the establishment number "EST. 17967" inside the USDA inspection mark.
