Final Rule on Organic Pasture Access

USDA announced details of its final regulation for access to pasture for organic livestock. The final rule amends the National Organic Program regulations to clarify the use of pasture in raising organic ruminants.

The new rule states that organic milk and meat must come from livestock grazing on pasture for at least four months out of the year and that 30% of the feed must come from grazing. The previous rules only required that organically raised livestock have "access to pasture."

The final rule will become effective on June 17, 2010. To read the USDA press release, click here.
