Walmart has announced a collaboration with Let's Move!, Michelle Obama's health campaign, that includes a five-year plan to sell healthier and more affordable food in its stores.
Cost of produce and other fresh groceries is often greater than that of processed and packaged foods. This can often result in consumers who purchase more affordable foods with less nutritional value. Additionally, food deserts (areas in which healthy food is harder to obtain) leave many Americans with few, if any, healthy and affordable food choices.
Walmart has numerous goals as part of the plan, which include reducing sodium content in foods by 25 percent before 2015, reducing added sugars by 10 percent, and removing all trans-fats from packaged food items. Anticipated results are that Americans could eliminate 47 million pounds of sodium annually from their diets and save up to $1 billion on fresh produce each year.
